System requirements
ClearVPN on routers works on the OpenVPN protocol. Your device needs to have an OpenVPN client and support OpenVPN 2.4 and above.
To check compatibility, you can refer to your router's manual or technical specifications online and look for OpenVPN client support (note that the OpenVPN client and OpenVPN server are separate features). You can also contact your router’s manufacturer directly.
Adding a new device and creating the .ovpn file
- In your ClearVPN cabinet (my.clearvpn.com), navigate to Device management, click on the Add new device option, select the Router tab in the pop-up window, and click Continue.
- On the setup page, you can assign a name for the device (it will default to Router 1 if you skip this step) and then select the desired server from the drop-down menu. After that, you can toggle our Online Threat Shield and DNS Adblock on if you want those features to be active during your connection. Click on the Download config file to finish the setup.
This will trigger the download of the .ovpn file, which you can find in your browser's downloads folder. - After clicking Download, apart from downloading the configuration file, the page will refresh and generate a Username and Password that you will need to use when setting up the VPN on your router. Leave this page open to reference it later.
If you closed it, you can always reopen the page with these credentials from the Device management tab by clicking on Configurations under your created router profile.
Router installation
The exact process will depend on your router's brand and model. Check your router manual and knowledge base for details on how to upload an OpenVPN client on your device.
Below, you will find an example of the installation process for the Asus router:
- After logging in to the router settings page with your username and password (usually, by default, they both should be admin unless you or your ISP changed it), navigate to the VPN > VPN Client tab.
- Click on the Add profile button and select OpenVPN. In the description field, type any name for this configuration. Enter the Username and Password you received after generating the file in the ClearVPN cabinet.
- Click on Choose file (or Browse, the exact name of the button may vary depending on your OS) in the Import .ovpn file field, select the .ovpn file you downloaded earlier, and then click Upload.
- Once the upload process is finished and you see the Complete message next to the button, you can click Ok to finish creating your OpenVPN profile.
- Click Activate to turn it on. A blue checkmark icon
should appear in the Connection Status column if the connection was successful.
Additional information
While your router's VPN connection is active, all standalone VPN clients and ad blockers on your devices that are connected to this network will interfere with it, so make sure you activate only one VPN connection simultaneously.
